Jury Duty!

Image: Filmreference.com

Yep, that's what I have tomorrow. I was hoping that I would be let out of it, since I'm a standby juror. No such luck. The good news is that I only have to go to the district court in the next town. The bad news is that I will be out of commission for at least part of the day. Oh well. Leave a message if you need to get hold of me and I'll call you back or email as soon as I am free.

I cut out and started sewing another pair of shorts from the McCalls pattern. This time I'm making the non-cuffed version, View D. I'm making it from this beautiful midweight brown linen from Gorgeous Fabrics. Sorry, it's sold out, but I have a bunch of other great linens that will work.

I washed and dried the linen and it really softened up. It's going to be great for casual summer shorts. I'll post more when I get from doing my civic duty.

Happy sewing!

I'm going to take a look at your selection of linens. I am sorely in need of new shorts.

I'm always conflicted about jury duty: it should be a jury of our piers, however most people either can not serve, do not serve, will do anything to get out of serving, or serve begrudgingly, which is about as bad or worse than not serving. And then there's the bit about doing your responsibility to give back for the freedom and rights we receive to our government. I have fallen under the latter, in my later days in life and resigned myself to three days of boredom before I am usually dismissed. I have never served on a jury mostly because my lawyer friends tell me that I make decisions on my own, and it is hard to sway me.

I usually take my sketch book and sketch and just relax and take some time off. I just take enough to keep me busy. Mostly it's boring unless you serve on a jury. Good luck!

As someone who has served twice I have looked at jury duty this way: If I were on trial I would want me--or someone like me--to have my fate in their hands, so I go, stay alert, and do what must be done. I feel I, we, are so privileged to have this system of justice, imperfect as it may be, rather than any of the others in this world. And I am also grateful not to be the one on trial ; )

I hope "your case moves quickly and ends well for you."

I wouldn't mind jury duty, but being married to an attorney means I never get picked.

Hope that the wisdom I recently shared with you (aka, that rant about my jury duty) helps you get through your experience unscathed. To paraphrase my SIL, if it can't be a good experience, at least make it a good story!

My DH is on two weeks of jury duty this week and next. This is his third time getting called in the 13 years we've lived here. Me - I haven't been called yet. Hope you hear an interesting case.

I have never been tapped for jury duty. I would have had trouble serving on a long trial when I was a single mom. Now, I have an ailment that would cause me to disrupt proceedings at random times so they wouldn't want me.

It is important we do our duty but it can be a big problem for some people. 1700's thinking in a 21st century time.
