Pattern Review: McCalls 5857 Take Two - Linen Shorts

I hope you had a nice weekend! It was a great weekend here. I taught a class on welt pockets Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon was pretty lazy, and we spent time just hanging out. Tomorrow is my wedding anniversary. We've been married half my life. Wow. That time has flown! We took the boys out to dinner last night to celebrate. Today was the boys' piano recital, and they both did great. And I got to finish my second pair of shorts!

This time I made them from a wonderful linen from Gorgeous Fabrics. I washed and dried it to soften it up and pre-wrinkle it. I made Version D this time: the longer, non-cuffed version.

Because I was working with a midweight linen that is a medium weave, I decided to stabilize the pocket opening. To do that, I simply basted a selvage from some silk chiffon in my stash along the edge of the pocket.

I also used lighter beige thread for contrast. You can see it on the pocket topstitching:

And on the hem:

Other than adding the stay on the pocket, I didn't make any changes. I still have stitches in my leg, so no pictures of me in the shorts for a while. But this is a great pattern that I would recommend for a wardrobe staple.

Did I mention that tomorrow is my wedding anniversary? Well, mark your calendars. We're going to do something fun to celebrate (Facebook Peeps already got the alert). So keep an eye out on your email. And as always,

Happy sewing!

The Word for the Day Is....

Your Word is "Fearless"

You see life as your one chance to experience everything, and you just go for it!

You believe the biggest risk is being afraid and missing out on something amazing.

Sometimes your fearlessness means you're daring. You enjoy risky activities.

And sometimes your fearlessness means you're courageous. You're brave enough to do the right thing, even when it's scary.

I saw this on Liana's Blog and thought I would have a try. No surprises there. My civic duty is done for at least 3 years. Hurrah! Massachusetts has a "One day/one trial" system. I didn't get chosen for a trial, so they sent me home.

I'm really close to finishing the second pair of shorts. Hopefully I'll be able to show them off tonight.

Happy sewing!

Jury Duty!

Image: Filmreference.com

Yep, that's what I have tomorrow. I was hoping that I would be let out of it, since I'm a standby juror. No such luck. The good news is that I only have to go to the district court in the next town. The bad news is that I will be out of commission for at least part of the day. Oh well. Leave a message if you need to get hold of me and I'll call you back or email as soon as I am free.

I cut out and started sewing another pair of shorts from the McCalls pattern. This time I'm making the non-cuffed version, View D. I'm making it from this beautiful midweight brown linen from Gorgeous Fabrics. Sorry, it's sold out, but I have a bunch of other great linens that will work.

I washed and dried the linen and it really softened up. It's going to be great for casual summer shorts. I'll post more when I get from doing my civic duty.

Happy sewing!

Oh What a Beautiful Day!

Actually, what a beautiful weekend is more like it. We needed this. We just hung around. On Saturday we had our big cookout. Yesterday we planted the garden

and all the herbs on the deck and in the windowboxes.

Last night, DH had a Booty Vortex gig, so the kids and I stayed home and watched movies together. It was great. Today, we washed the cars

and made pulled pork for dinner, along with an amazing Peruvian dish called Papa a la Huancaina. DS the elder is doing a big report on Peru for school tomorrow, and he wanted to bring this in as part of it. So we made up a batch for us to taste. I now have a new potato salad substitute for summer! This stuff is amazing. Here's the recipe if you are interested. Sorry, no pictures of food here. I find pictures of food, unless they are incredibly well composed (hint: turn the flash off) to be, well, distasteful.

Parting Shot - Hoover!
Hoover had a good weekend too. He went swimming yesterday, lay around in the sunshine while we planted, and spent today running around the yard. It's good to be a dog in our house.

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day if you celebrate it. If not, I hope you had a great weekend and Monday. Tomorrow I'm going to make another pair of shorts and try to get started on the Marfy muslin.

Happy sewing!

Pattern Review - McCall 5857 Shorts

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Yesterday it was 90º, today it's 59º. I love New England! It's supposed to be around 80 tomorrow. Yep, like the saying goes, if you don't like the weather here, wait a minute. It'll change. To prep for summer, I made a pair of shorts from McCalls 5857. As you may know, I've been working on a pretty complex Marfy Jacket Pattern. It's great to work on, but it is intense, so I need something to keep me on track while I work on the muslin. This has been the tracker.

Pattern Description: From the website, "MISSES' SHORTS IN FOUR LENGTHS: Shorts A, B, C, D, E, F have front mock fly, slanted side seam pockets, back darts, waistband and carriers; shorts B, D have turned-up cuffs; shorts F have side slits and length is 3" above mid-knee; the upper edge of waistband is at waistline for all shorts."

I made View D. The longer cuffed shorts.

Sizing: 4-20. I made a straight 14.

Fabric Used: Medium Wash Non-stretch Denim from Gorgeous Fabrics (well, yeah!)
Needle/Notions Used: Universal 80/12 needle. Weft insertion interfacing from Fashion Sewing Supply.

Did it look like the photo or drawing when you got through? Yes

How were the instructions? They were very good.

Construction Notes: Nothing earth shattering. This pattern was drafted very well. I decided to add a CB seam to the waistband (it's a one-piece) in case I needed to change it for fit. I did scoop out the back crotch seam to make it an L shape. I finished all seams with a serger. And I used contrast thread for the topstitching. You can see the topstitching and the back seam here:

Any changes? Just those noted above.

Likes/Dislikes: This is a great pattern. I made it from denim this time, but I have seersucker, linen and more denim to use for shorts. I desperately need shorts and this is a great pattern for my summer wardrobe. Other than changing the back crotch curve to an L, I didn't need to do any fitting adjustments.

Would you do it again? Would you recommend it? Yes and a hearty Yes!

Conclusion: Great pattern! Here's the finished version. I apologize that you have to see it on Shelly. I had a mole removed from my right leg this week, so I have six stitches and a humongous bandage. It doesn't make for good styling. And you know I'm not going to show up If I can't style it properly. Bandages just don't do it unless you're Azzedine Alaia. Here it is pinned up on Shelley:

Parting Shot
Phyllis and her family came over for lobster dinner, and her DH and mine had on shirt cousins. I had made DH an aloha shirt several years ago, and I gave Phyllis the fabric I had left, which she used to make her DH a shirt. So here they are:

Nice shirts, fellas!
We'll be closed on Monday, May 25 in observance of Memorial Day here in the US. Any orders that come in over the weekend will be processed and shipped after Monday.

What I'm Working On...

If you ever want to know why it is I don't make more Marfy patterns, you're looking at the reason. I love Marfy. Their lines are great; their patterns, for the most part, are incredibly chic; their fit is generally impeccable.

But...

They are an utter PITA to get sewing with. And because I'm really wanting to take my time and do this jacket right, I have traced it out onto individual muslin pieces, which I will sew into a toile for fitting and adjustments. Once all that is done, it gets a lot easier. But to paraphrase a Tom Petty song, "the tracing is the hardest part". Well, the tracing followed by the drafting of the lining and facings, but that's not that bad. I'm going to use the analysis and construction of an Yves Saint Laurent jacket from Claire Shaeffer's Couture Sewing Techniques book to do the internal construction of the jacket. So that's where it stands. I may whip up a pair of shorts in the meantime. It's supposed to be 80º F later this week. I have a bunch of seersucker and some McCalls patterns that I picked up at JoAnn's last 99-cent sale. I'm thinking this will look good and be quick to make:

Maybe I'll do that while I recharge the couture mojo.

When I Was a Kid, I'd Hear Things Go Bump in the Night

And I'd think, "What's coming to get me?!"

Nowadays, I hear things go bump in the night and I think, "What's that going to cost me?"

We've had a slight problem with our bathroom. Ever since it was installed 11 years ago, there has been a problem where moisture would bead along the rim behind the tub, and it would cause the plaster to bubble about every other year. We checked for a pinhole leak, and there wasn't one, and every plumber we talked to said to just repair the wall.

Well recently it started getting worse. DH repaired the wall, but less than a month later, the bubbling was back and far worse. So we took the wall next to the tub and the wall behind it out. There doesn't appear to be a leak but we'll get a plumber in this week. Sigh. It's always something, you know? The good news is that we finally replaced the shed that got demolished by the tree last winter, so the snow blower, the lawnmower and the kids' bikes have a new home.

I'm tracing off the Marfy pattern onto muslin. I'm taking my time on this one. I'll make a full muslin and use that for fitting and adjustments, then I'll take it apart and use it for the pattern. I'm also going to try to work up the Yves Saint Laurent shoulder treatment on this, per Claire Shaeffer's instructions in her Couture Sewing Techniques book.

Georgene of the Sewing Divas
took her couture class and was telling me about the shaping and support of the shoulder, and I really want to have my hand at it. This one is going to take a while but I think it will be worth it. Stay tuned, much more to come...

Cottons, Classes, Cameras and a Crisis of Faith

It's been a busy week, and I haven't had much time to post. But just to bring you up to speed, here's a rundown on what's been happening.

First up, cottons, linens and shirtings are on sale at Gorgeous Fabrics! We have some great fabrics on sale for 15% off, just in time for warm weather. And I've been adding some spectacular silks to the mix too. Check it out and have a ball. The sale lasts through Sunday.

Tomorrow's Saturday Seminar is all about designer seam finishes. We have a great crew taking classes, and it has helped reboot my sewing mojo. Now if only I had more time this week.

Cool Toy! Thank you to LindsayT for introducing me to the Eye-Fi Wireless memory card. It plugs into the camera and once it is set up, badabing! It automatically uploads pictures from your camera to your computer. I asked for it for Mother's Day, and it arrived just in time. Alas, my camera takes a ScanDisk memory card, so we had to get an adapter. But last night DH got it all working. No more dealing with cables. Hooray! Here's a picture of Hoover taken with it.

According to DH, you don't have to be in close proximity of the computer to download. You can be one or two rooms over, or upstairs. Kewl!

Now for the not-so-fun part. Last June, the priest at my church, Father Lenny, left to become pastor of a church near Harvard University. We were without a permanent pastor for 6 months. I referred to us as The Island of Misfit Toys. We had a temp guy, Father John. He seemed nice and funny, and ultimately, he became the pastor.

Well, be careful what you wish for. Not to put too fine a point on it, the guy has turned out to be a psycho. He's dismantling everything that Lenny put in place over his 14 years at the church, and he's driving away many of the parishoners. Our choir director is leaving in June and he has told the parish council that we're not going to replace him. And this guy is an angry, angry man. I could tell all sorts of tales about his atrocious behavior towards people who don't "yes" him all the time. And he keeps telling people that he can't wait to get rid of the people who come from other towns and just make this a "Burlington parish". Alas, it is his type of priest that prompted me to give up Catholicism for 17 years. I'm not a holy-holy type of person, but I had found a home and community in this place, and now he's destroying that for the entire parish. It's sad and I'm really pretty upset about it. I'm going to start shopping for a new church this weekend. My DS the Eldest is going to be a confirmation candidate starting next year, and I don't want him confirmed under the tutelage of this guy. It's frickin' depressing. Maybe I'll go back to singing with the Anglicans.

Anyway, that's what's been keeping me occupied. I hope you all are having a good week. Oh! And my Marfys finally arrived. Yay!!! So I'm tracing off the muslin for the jacket and I'll start on it this weekend.

Happy sewing!

Not-Quite Pattern Review - Jalie 2806 v.2

I already made this pattern once before, and you can read that review here. Not much has changed, but I did a couple of things differently.

Fabric used: Rayon Jersey in Warm Pink from Gorgeous Fabrics (natch).

What I did differently this time: Last time I made this top, I folded the gathered extension at center front over the neckline, per the instructions, and sewed it invisibly to the front. This time I just serged it to the neckband and then topstitched to secure it in place.

I also shortened the sleeves.

Likes/Dislikes: I really like this pattern, but I don't like it as well in this fabric. I think it's because of the solid. The first iteration I made was a cool print, and I think that the print blends the gathered extension and looks better than the solid rayon jersey. On me, the bubble from the extension brings to mind that classic (albeit very minor) character from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Triple-Breasted Whore of Eroticon Six. The print masks that effect. But the pattern went together beautifully, and I do recommend it. Really.

Conclusion: A great pattern, but not my favorite fabric/pattern combo. I think with solid jerseys I'll stick with plainer necklines.

Happy sewing!

Weekend Pictures

The video of the concert isn't supposed to be ready for about 2 weeks, but DH and DSons took pictures at the concert.

Here's Ryan conducting the chorus

Here's The first song of our set - "I Can't Sit Down". I'm sitting next to Dick Frost, who is a wonderful baritone. I love singing with him, we always have a great time. We weren't singing for this one. But the funny thing is that I was singing along silently with the chorus, to stay warmed up. You don't see it in this picture, but there's one picture where my mouth is closed while my throat is obviously working. You see that a lot with singers.

And MTV videos notwithstanding, singing is not an aesthetically pleasing endeavor if done right. Watch any good singer and you will see that when they open their mouth, they have a lot of stuff going on at the back of their throat that doesn't photograph well. Usually when you see stills of singers, they aren't really singing. Same with videos. You'll see people lipsynching, and keeping their lower jaw set so they don't get a double chin effect. Not so when someone is really singing.

Dick was up next. He sang "I Got Plenty o' Nothing", and nailed it.

The audience just ate it up. What fun!

After that, I sang "Summertime". Interestingly enough, I wasn't nervous at all. I think this was the first time in about 20 years that I didn't have butterflies when I stood up to sing. I was even sitting there while Dick was singing, thinking, "Wow, my mouth isn't drying out like it usually does before a performance. Whazzup with that?" I think it went really well. I love this song, and I can't believe I never performed it in public before.

It was a truly wonderful moment. I've said before that the closest I ever get to a religious experience is when I sing. This was it. Allow me a little navel gazing for a moment. When I sing, I really try to interpret and internalize the text. The music is beautiful, but it's the words that make it communicate. "Summertime" is a lullaby, and when I sing it, I immediately call to mind holding my children and rocking them to sleep or comforting them. I try to float the high notes, not blast them. It makes the music that much more lovely to me, and I hope that comes across in my singing.

Okay, enough navel gazing. The last song was "I'm On My Way". It was a blast. I got to hit the wicked high note at the end, which is always fun. That one I did power through. Fun fun fun!

Here's a better picture of the dress I wore. It's Butterick 4343. I made it 5 years ago for another concert. It's actually a little big these days - yay! It's made from a 4 ply silk, lined with silk habotai. You can't see it, but I did a hand-set embellished zipper with sequins and beads on both sides. It's fabulous and comfortable!

Okay, enough about me. Here's the parting shots from the weekend. Mother's Day was wonderful. One of the things we did was take Hoover to a place we call "Dogtopia". It's a huge field in Lexington that has a cistern where dogs can swim. Hoover loves to jump into the water, so here are some action shots I took:

I cut out another knit top and am about 2/3 of the way through it. I'll review it tomorrow.

Happy Mother's Day! 2009

I wish all of you who are mom's a very happy Mother's Day. We're going to see "Star Trek" and then have a clambake on the deck with my twin, Tom and his wife. And I think I'll make myself a quick top (still no Marfy pattern, boo hoo!) today.

The singing with Wakefield Choral Society went really well. They recorded it for TV, so DH says he's going to get a copy. It was a little poignant, since it was the last time for the foreseeable future that I'll sing with Ryan, WCS' director. But I can't be too sad, since he's leaving Boston to become the associate director (the number two guy) at the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. I told him, "Hey, if any of those divas you hire pulls, well, a Diva, keep my number on speed dial. Especially during ski season." We laughed.

So go have a great Mother's Day and think good thoughts about the mothers you know.

Still No Sewing

But lots and lots getting done. I'm busy prepping for the first Saturday Series Class this weekend. Yesterday, I went to get my mail and found the most delightful surprise waiting for me! Barbara of Cat Fur Studio sent me the most wonderful, drool-worthy book,

THANK YOU BARBARA!!! This book is to die for, and I'll dive into it this weekend.

I'm also reading a guilty-pleasure book,
How can you resist? It's the classic Jane Austen story, punctuated by encounters with the undead. What's not to love? I have to admit, I was immediately sucked in when I read the full title: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies: The Classic Regency Romance - Now with Ultraviolent Zombie Mayhem!

As I say, how can you resist? I'm giggling myself to sleep at night, reading the adventures of the Bennett girls as they negotiate the zombie-infested waters of 19th century romance. I've never been a big vampire fan. Twilight and its ilk leave me cold. But zombies? Love it! One of my favorite movies ever is Shaun of the Dead.

And speaking of geek chic, how happy am I that Simon Pegg, aka Shaun of the Dead himself, is playing the role of Chief Engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the new Star Trek movie??? I am very happy. My weekend plans are set. Teach class on Saturday morning, perform as featured soloist at the Wakefield Chorus' concert on Saturday night, go see Star Trek on Sunday. Sounds like a good weekend, and I may even get some sewing in!

Happy Trekkin'!

None

That's how much sewing I have done since last week. This weekend was jammed with activity. I spent Thursday and Friday in New York meeting with vendors. I got to spend some serious time with Emmett and with Chloe. I also got to spend Friday afternoon with the wonderful Barbara of Cat Fur Studio. I had such a great time with her! Being the evil enabler that I am, I dragged her to Lace Star. And we found a fantastic wig shop on 37th that we both fell in love with! I came home on Friday night and turned around and drove to Connecticut on Saturday for my godson's first communion. Then on Sunday I sang at the confirmation at my church. I ran from that to my neighbor's surprise 50th birthday party. Today I am exhausted.

But the good news is that I got some really cool fabrics for Gorgeous Fabrics that I'll be putting up today and tomorrow. I'm still waiting for my Marfy patterns :( I'm hoping those will arrive this week. I'd like to get working on them to use as some examples for my Saturday Series classes.

Speaking of which, for anyone in the Boston area who may be interested, the Saturday Series starts this weekend. It's a four week series of 2 hour classes that go from 10 to noon on Saturdays. There are still openings. If you're interested, drop me a note at Ann "at" Gorgeousfabrics "dot" com and I'll send you the sign up information.

Hopefully I'll get to do some sewing this week.
Happy Monday!
