I lean toward the first option, myself.
So here's a question for you, since I've been cleaning rather than sewing. If you had the choice, would you rather travel to somewhere special and amazing, or would you rather stay home and receive a really special and amazing gift (not of travel)?
No, you can not say you want to receive a special gift while traveling somewhere amazing.
Talk amongst yourselves. I'll be back when the swatch bins are up to date.
Happy sewing!

I personally would rather travel to an amazing place (and I have a whole list of places in mind). But that may be because I'm not into fancy cars or jewelry-what I have I really, really like & can't really think of a thing I would want that much!
Travel. No contest, hands down.
Travel somewhere amazing, no question. I just read an article somewhere about the link between spending money and happiness, and researchers agree that you get the most bang for the buck (so to speak) spending $ on experiences (a trip, a sewing class, a party) than on things. Something to chew on -- I wish I could remember where I read this.
Travel. Memories you can't loose. A special material gift, you can loose -- won't stay with you forever.
Alternatively, stay home and give a special gift to someone you care about (which would be a way to "receive a special gift" and then donate it onwards, volunteer etc)
I'm a total home-body. Send the gift to me and I'll be happy as a clam!
NO contest. Travel. I like baubles but the memories of places and people is so much more enriching.
Travel...there are so many amazing places to see!
Travel! Perhaps a riding safari in Rajastan - complete with textile related excursions and workshops.
I'd rather have the gift, but then I am a homebody.
I really do love to travel - but...ummmm...what if the amazing and special gift is a gift certificate? For fabric? From a truly fab online fabric store?
You see my dilemma, don't you?
Definitely travel. I would rather have memories, not things.
While I enjoy traveling, I am by nature a homebody, so I would choose the gift. Especially if it was a top of the line sewing/embroidery machine!
@anon, you read that in the NYTimes and I read it, too. That article validated thoughts I had. Hence my decision to set up a fitting session with Kenneth king and skip the fabric purchases for my recent day trip into New York (which counts as a special and amazing place to me!)
Yes TRAVEL! When time and finances permit, I prefer travel to someplace special and amazing.
Travel, don't even have to think about it! I was born to travel, I really do believe that. "Gifts" of actual merchandise often serve merely to clutter up your home, travel is something you can take everywhere with you and takes up no room except in your head.
Travel! There are wonderful places to visit in our world... can you imagine if there were other worlds to visit?
Travel.
I can think of dozens of special and amazing places I'd like to go. I can think of only a few special and amazing things I'd like to own.
Yeah, definitely travel.
I've travelled my entire life and am now a bit of a homebody. I guess I'd rather receive an amazing gift!
I'm a homebody. I would rather stay home and receive the amazing and special gift!
For me, it would depend on the circumstances and timing. I love to travel, but not to just anyplace, and sometimes I would honestly rather stay home.
Had to add that if I didn't travel, I would take dinner out with my husband at a fabulous restaurant over most other gifts. :)
Oooo... tough one. I do love a great gift but I would have to choose the travel option. A vacation is always welcome.

Travel definitely. I love to travel and my dh and I never fight when we are traveling, not that we fight all that much, but we are much more relaxed when we travel so things that bother us at home just go right on by when we are away.
Unless the special gift is a housekeeper and chef for the rest of my life, I'll take the travel. I think. Too many unanswered questions, given my history of "special gifts" and of "family vacations" where I would have had a better time staying home and going to work.
I am not much of a traveler nor am I materialistic...but I am a homebody...so given the choice...Gift for me :)
I would stay at home. I like
always have like traveling but as
I get older I like to stay and home
I would stay home..I am like that!!!
Travel. Definitely. Someone else's "ordinary" may be my "amazing". Even reading blogs is a way to travel into someone else'e world for a little while.
I am definitely a homebody . . . but I'd take the travel option in a heartbeat! My travel experiences and memories will stay with me for a lifetime.
Travel. To China. I've always longed to go there and walk the Great Wall until my feet hurt.
Then on to Ireland. Don't exactly know why, just want to, is all. :-)
Oo.. I'm not sure. It would probably depend on the present. :) But most likely, it will be traveling.
Definitely travel. Nothing beats traveling and disconnecting from everything.
Travel - but only if I don't have to do the planning, ticket purchasing and pre-trip organizing! Or on-trip organizing either! LOL!
Travel, food and wine are the 3 things I spend money on. I prefer experiences over possessions. Plus you never get buyers remorse over a great trip or great meal the way you do about that new cell phone or tv that you really didn't need.
Travel. I love to travel and do it as much as I can. Even thinking about the most fantastic gift I could ever imagine (house overlooking the ocean, penthouse apartment in NYC, Ferrari...) would have additional expense or not last. I'd always have the experience of the travel.
Yeah I'm more like Gigi, since I've travled my whole life and have lived all over the US. But I would say experiences mean more to me than objects. And wonderful experiences can be had close to home, travel doesn't need to be part of it.
Stay home. I've traveled a lot and I'm kind of done with that. I'd even be happy with a small gift while staying home! More time for sewing if I stay home!
travel period. My daughter was working in Jamaica a couple of weeks ago and got an opportunity to swim in a luminescence pool at night. She called me and said she'd wished I was there to share the experience-- me too.
It really depends on the gift and the destination. I'm pretty much a homebody, but if I was given the option of going to Hawaii, or even Australia, I'd do it in a heartbeat. Other than that, I'll take a new sewing machine and stay home.
I'm a homebody and I choose TRAVEL!!!
I have already traveled to amazing places and loved it, I lust for traveling to more. So answer is very easy. I hate using vacation days to be at home. That's what weekends are for.
