Yes, it's definitely the dog days of summer! Everything is going at a slower pace than the norm. Kids are wrapping up summer vacations (not a moment too soon, either). And friends are going on vacation. That means we get to babysit. Dogs. Lots of them. We had Tessa the Rottie a couple of weeks ago, and last week we took my friend Barb's dogs. And it was one hot week! Oh, I know it's worse in the middle of the country, but if you wear a full time fur coat, anything over about 80 degrees gets pretty bad pretty quickly. I spent the whole time trying not to trip over various carcasses strewn across my floor. It reminded me of the morning after parties in my first apartment. To whit, we had
Hoover:
Polly, a very sweet, 14 1/2 year old French Bassett
and
Maggie, a 140 lb. lap dog wanna-be. Fortunately, this heat makes her less cuddly than usual.
I must say, of those 140 lbs, I think about 120 are spit. See that head? It's solid drool. Okay, 99.9997% drool, and two brain cells. I'm still mopping up!

Ooo, what a pack of sweeties! Isn't it funny how "cool = sprawl on tile/hardwood" to a dog? My dog does the same thing after a walk in this heat.
I can relate. Although besides stepping over our one (though rather large) dog, I'm also stepping over whichever kids have slept over the night before. I'm about ready to get back to some kind of regular schedule!
Maggie looks like a Brindle Mastiff! I have a fawn English Mastiff, 272 lbs of bony lap-dog-wanna-be! He looks just like that on my tile floor these days!
Marjie, Maggie is, indeed, a brindle English Mastiff. 140 lbs of creampuff. She sings too! We do duets. I sing soprano, she sings bass.
Our long-haired cats shaved do the same thing during heat waves. We recently sent the oldest for a "lion-clip" after not seeing much of her for six weeks, and it's as if she's 8 years younger, much livelier and more cuddly. Naturally, the weather cooled down the day after her haircut.
Dahling, are you going to the Dog Fashion show in New York? I hope so. Yes, my pup is stretched out on his day bed sleeping. He has no energy, except when it comes to his walks and food.
