Lady Gray:
vs.
McCalls 5525:
Keeping in mind that the final version will be ivory French lace backed with champagne colored silk charmeuse and lined with Oyster Silk Habotai.
I have a definite opinion, but I'd love to hear yours.
Happy sewing!

The second is better, IMO, for what it's worth.
Lady Grey, so you can sew along with us. Although, i must say that mccall looks better on you. Thanks for the fabric tips btw, i decided to go with the Italian tweed for lady grey:)
I think the Lady Grey will look better in the fabric you have chosen! I think it will make your fabric choice more flirty and youthful. Just my two cents. :) I know your coat will be gorgeous no matter what pattern you choose.
For my 2 cents, I like the neckline of the Lady Grey better, but perhaps with slightly smaller lapels. And narrower sleeves... maybe the sleeves of the mccalls on the lady grey?
Both good choices. With your planned fitting changes the Lady Grey should be slightly more fabulous than the McCalls.
The shape of the Lady Gray, IMO, does nothing for you, unless you LIKE to look wider than you are. I know everyone is hoping you'll sew along on Lady Gray, but I'm afraid the gorgeous lace and charmeuse will be wasted on a coat that makes you appear older. I can just imagine Tim Gunn wrinkling his brow and muttering something about the mother of the bride. Frankly, Ann, I'm worried!
As much as I'd love to see you Lady Grey it up with the rest of us, the round collar on that second coat is adorable and I love how it hangs on you.
I like the second one better.
I think the Lady Grey is much more shapely. The McCall's feels very matronly in muslin, but would probably be more retro in cream lace. How's that for completely noncommittal? If it were me, I'd do the Lady Grey.
IMHO--Lady Gray has a lot of fitting issues. Also, the proportions seem to be amiss. I think in order for it to look more balanced, it needs to be longer and the collar narrowed. I like the Vogue coat better.
I vote for M5525.
Only because of the fabrics you have chosen am I voting for McCalls.
It seems to have a more formal look to it that would suit the lace and silk.
The Lady Gray is a very flattering fit on you thus far.
I'd consider tapering the sleeves a little so that they are less "Jedi" looking.
I like them both for different reasons. The Lady Gray to me looks more *wrap-like* and hourglass in shape if that makes sense and the McCalls looks more sleek and traditional. However, I think in the fabrics you have chosen that the Lady Gray would be more fun and flirty. I would be concerned about the more traditional trench shape of the McCalls pattern looking matronly in the lace...well that's my 2 cents, plus a nickel!
I prefer the mccalls - i am sorry to say that i really can't warm to the lady grey pattern - even the model on the pattern envelope doesn't look good in it. all aspects of it are so big - the collar, the width of the sleeves, the flare below the waist. but i like small and lady grey may just photograph badly and may look much better in real life. ruth
I like the Lady Grey better.
No question in my mind....McCalls, of course. Was going to join the sew-a-long myself but knew that pattern/style would do nothing for my "girls".
I am certain that you will make your own decision. Everything I have seen on your blog is flattering and well made. You know yourself and your style better than anyone. I wanted to join the sew-a-long but decided to make the Mcalls pattern instead. I am way too short-waisted to wear a belt.
I like the long lines of the McCall's better! Then again, maybe I just don't have the imagination to look past the Lady Gray sleeves...
Mccalls. You look a little constricted in the Lady Grey.
Instant gut reaction when I saw your post...McCall's hands down. I also love the collar on that one. Your fabric choice sounds amazing, and I can't wait to see how you work it out.
I think The Lady in Grey makes you look a lot bigger than you are.
I was all for Lady Grey until you describe the fabric. I think the McCall's would be better with the lace.
Another vote for the McCalls!
I'll be interested to see which you choose. My first reaction is to go with the McCalls -- the muslin looks great on you and the pattern will allow the lace to do the talking. On the other hand, I would love to see what you would do with a Lady Gray pattern. It is hard for me to share the excitement over that pattern, as it does not impress me as attractive on any but the slenderest and most long-waisted of figures. (I am sorry to say so, by the way, as I admire other things about the Colette line). Now if YOU were to take it on, you would certainly find its fabulosity.
It is hard to judge because the McCalls fits well and the Lady Grey doesn't (yet).
If you keep going with LG, maybe it needs scaled down-lapels.
For the fabric you want to use, I like the McCalls much better. The simplicity will let the fabric sing.
Them's my 2 pennies.
I am very surious to read your choice, especially your reasoning.
You already know how I feel about it!
First impression, M5525; however, if you sleek up the LG to suit your sleek figure it will be a treasured garment in the fabrics chosen. Humble suggestions: drop the waist a bit, eliminate the belt, narrow the sleeves, reduce fullness at waist-hip level, reduce the width of the lapel, and add some length.
I understand the draw of a sew-along, but really IMHO the Lady Gray looks like a coat worn by one of my late mother's zoftig lady friends, not flattering on her nor, I am afraid, on you. To me it is ho-hum ordinary. The wide wing collar, trumpet sleeves which fall at your hipline, and the belt offer strong horizontal lines that make you seem broader than you are. I feel you would look tall and slender (which you are) in the McCall's pattern which offers sleek lines and an interesting collar to showcase your lovely face.
That's really interesting that you posted these two options today because I was just weighing up between those two coats for myself.
I LOVE the Lady Grey pattern and when you posted about the alterations you had in mind I totally agreed and thought it would look great after the adjustments. I then started to wonder if I am too short to carry off the LG without being swamped. Plus being a SAHM I liked that the McCalls uses less fabric :)
Now thinking about your fabric choice, maybe the McCalls would do it more justice with less 'interruption' to the flow of the fabric.
Also, I find it hard to imagine anything looking sassy when it is made up in muslin, lol.
My final opinion: I think....hmmm....I'd like to see a new muslin with the adjustments in LG on you ;-)
Oh My...the McCalls !
I vote for the McCalls! Ann you know your figure and the shape of the McCalls is much more flattering IMHO. If the shape works then the fabric will make it fabulous!
