My Name is Earl

Image: CBC

I don't know if you've heard (snicker), but there's a hurricane heading up the East Coast right now. Earl is already clouding up the skies over Boston, and the rains are supposed to start in earnest sometime late this afternoon. We're fortunate that we live in days like this where we have 7x24 access to satellite data, doppler radar, and experts on the Weather Channel to whip into a frenzy ("Nail your shutters! Nail your roof! Nail your cat to your dog!")

But since I don't want anyone caught in terrible traffic, and so my folks can put their lawn chairs and other potential flying objects away before the storm hits, we'll probably close Gorgeous Fabrics' offices just a wee bit early tonight. But not until the orders from yesterday ship, so don't worry!

Also, our offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day on Monday. There's no UPS or postal service that day, so everything may get to you a little slower than usual. But it will be on its way, promise!

I'm hoping to spend much of the weekend working on my Lady Gray coat. Speaking of which, check Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing later today, to read a fascinating article on fabrics for said coat, by an awesome writer (wink, wink)!

If you're in the path of Earl, be safe. And to all, have a great weekend and

Happy sewing!

New AMAZING Designer Fabrics at Gorgeous Fabrics!

Oh. My. God! You have to see the fabrics that just came in. From the Fall 2010 collections of Chanel, Akris, Malandrino and others. They are not to be missed. I was only able to get a very limited amount of these fabrics. They are dear, but they are worth every penny, and when they are gone, there ain't no more! I've put up several, and I'll be adding more tonight. If you like them (and I know I love them) don't hesitate - they'll be gone in a flash!

Working On...

Lots of stuff. This is the last weekend before the kids head back to school (Halleluia!!!!), so we've been out enjoying the last little bit of freedom before we all get back to work. I've cut out the muslin for the Colette Lady Grey trench coat:

I'm going to make it from a French lace that has been aging in my stash for several years. I bought it wanting to make a Burberry-Prorsum style trench, but all the patterns that I've found for trenches just didn't do it for me. Then I saw this one and was intrigued. I have never sewn a Colette pattern, so I'm making a muslin of the size 8 to check it out. I'll post my progress.

Speaking of this pattern, there is a sew-along starting up using this pattern on Gertie's New Blog for Better Sewing. I'm not going to officially participate in the sew-along. I can't commit to sew-alongs because I can never tell if I'll be able to finish it in the timeframe, but I will be following it and maybe even contributing a little bit here and there!

I've also been working on doing some preliminary editing on a book (not mine - I'm really just helping the author out). But as soon as I can tell you about it, I will, because it is going to be amazing!

Also, did you know that there is a Huge Labor Day Sale going on at Gorgeous Fabrics? Well there is! Every fabric, except muslin and swatches, is marked down until next Monday (Labor Day, September 6). So get your bad self over there and snap up some bargains! We're selling out a bunch of the new fabrics; don't wait if you've been eying them. They aren't going to last.

Parting Shots - Sewing Machines on Newbury Street
Today we took the kids to Newbury Street in Boston. Newbury Street is the high-end shopping street in town. Though it's disheartening to see how many shops are closed up and how many "For Rent" signs there are. I hope this recession ends soon.

Anyway, we were walking down the street, between Dartmouth and Exeter Streets, when we came upon a store whose windows were chock full of GORGEOUS antique sewing machines! I had to snap pictures from my phone. Sorry for the reflections off the glass. I tried to get pictures at angles that would minimize the reflections, but it was impossible with the phone. But still, this was amazing display. I want to call the store tomorrow and find out if they would be willing to sell any of the machines!

Le sigh... Happy sewing!

Material or Fabric?

Here's a question for you. Do you refer to the "stuff" out of which you make garments as "material" or as "fabric"?  My mom always used to call it material. I've called it fabric at least since I moved away from home. I've seen and heard it called both.

I used to work in supply chain when I was in high-tech. Supply chain refers to the things and processes that take a product from raw, well, material to finished goods. So "material" in my world is a general moniker for physical things, while "fabric" refers specifically to textiles. So I call it "fabric".

How about you? What do you call it?

Anyone Seen My Mojo?

I have had absolutely no desire to sew this week. At all. My poor dress casts me forlorn glances when I walk by it, but to no avail. But the good news is that, after today I will only have two radiation treatments left! How nice will it be to not have to go every day? I'll tell you - so nice! Maybe that will put some spring back in my sewing step.

Flash Sale on Linings Today!
In the meantime, we're running a flash sale today at Gorgeous Fabrics. From 10AM to 1 PM (EDT) only, all linings are on sale for 25% off our regular prices!

Fabric Giveaway, Kittens!

It's another giveaway kids! This time, three lucky folks will get a grab-box full of fabrics. Most of these cuts are around a yard. Some are more, some are less. These are headers and samples of fabrics that have sold out at Gorgeous Fabrics. Rather than having them go to a landfill, let's put them to good use by people who love fabrics! All of them are usable for things like tops, skirts (okay, in some cases, mini-skirts maybe), handbag linings... use your skills and imagination! There are silks, knits, wools, cottons and other things. All I ask is that you pay for shipping, which will be by USPS Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Box. Postage is $14.50 within the US. For international postage rates, check out This Page at the USPS site.

So the big question, of course is, how do you enter to win? Two things. First - stroke my ego and tell me what your favorite post is on my blog. Second (and most important) - put your email in the comments section. Do yourself a favor and enter your email address in the format yourname "at" xyz "dot" com. That way any bots that search the net for email addresses can't pick you up easily. On Friday afternoon, May 7, I'll have my kids draw three winners from a hat. These are nice fabrics, so have fun with it.

Good luck and happy sewing!

Larry Bird Shorts!

Is it totally ridiculous that a woman of a certain age (me) wants to make these Burda shorts?
I love them! Now I grant you, they aren't something I'd wear to church or to a parent-teacher meeting. They bring back memories of the basketball uniforms that Larry Bird and the 80's Boston Celtics wore, don't they?

But how fun will these be to just slip on for summer? It's the kind of look that needs legs without cellulite (thank you very much Mom), and in my case, self tanner. But I think I'll trace these off and whip up a pair. Or several. The May issue of Burda has a bunch of shorts patterns that are cute and look super fast to make. I think I'll try the bermudas too. They would work well in one of the Madras Patchwork Cottons. I think this one in blues would look really nice:

What are you working on this weekend?

*Interesting piece of trivia: in the photo of Bird, number 25 is Doc Rivers, the current coach of the Celtics

Burda Style 02-2010 Skirt 104

This little skirt, as Burda puts it, "is a must for your holiday suitcase because it’s so practical and uncomplicated." I wanted an uncomplicated skirt pattern to use with my fabric, and this fit the bill.

I'm not going to review this per-se, since there are so many reviews out there for similar patterns. It's a  yoked A-line skirt that sits slightly below the natural waist. It has side-front pockets and a back zip. It's incredibly easy to make, and I'd recommend it if you have this issue and want a simple skirt.

Fabric Used: Perfectly Preppy Patchwork Cotton in Pinks/Blues/Greens from Gorgeous Fabrics (of course)

Construction Notes: I just want to give you a few tips about working with this fabric and the other patchwork cottons I got in recently. First off - LOVE IT! I threw this fabric in the washing machine and dryer to pre-treat it. It has a nice hand off the bolt, but once it's washed, it is incredibly soft. So definitely prewash these fabrics. Some of them are overdyed, so they will have a tendency to bleed dye for the first couple of washes. This one isn't so saturated with dye as some of the others, but they all benefit from a run through the wash before you cut and sew.

The second thing to note about this fabric is that, because it is sewn and then serged together, you can't use fusible interfacing with it. I used silk organza to interface the yoke bands. It worked beautifully. You can also use plain muslin for interfacing. Because of the sewing lines/serging, you also want to be careful when hemming any garments. I found the best way to hem this skirt was to pin the hem in place, then press before actually sewing the hem. If you take a close look at the bottom of the skirt, you'll see the cutting/hem line go across the seams in the fabric. Pressing them before sewing helps keep them in line. You will also want to grade any seams carefully in facings and other tight areas, to eliminate bulk.

I finished the seams in my skirt by serging the edge of each seam allowance. The fabric doesn't really ravel too much, but that gives it a nice finish.

With these fabrics, I recommend keeping the lines of your garment relatively simple. A classic top or skirt will work great with these fabrics. So will a dress with relatively few design lines. The fabric is so fun by itself, it really doesn't need to compete with the pattern.

Likes/Dislikes: I really like the lines of this skirt. It lets the fabric have center stage. I also like it with this fabric because it looks cute and preppy.

Conclusion: It's supposed to be in the 80s tomorrow here in Boston (before falling to the 40s on Thursday), so I think I'll wear this with a little tee-shirt
and espadrilles, put on my pink wig, put the top down and go out for a drive at lunch.

Happy sewing!

OMG, kittens, my Parisian connection came through again, big time! I have two beautiful fabrics from that couture tailleur. First up is this beautiful wool/mohair plaid:

I was only able to get 6 yards of this incredible bouclé houndstooth, so don't let it slip by!

Yes, they are expensive, but they are wide, they are real, and they are gorgeous!

Three! - And 25

I've been a real slacker about blogging lately. But it's because I've been really busy. I've been on a buying trip this week. I'll be posting the fruits of that over the next couple of days. In the meantime, are you sick to death of seeing fabulous fabrics from that couture house on the rue Cambon? Oh well, too bad! Because guess what? I got not one, not two, but three beautiful fabrics from that couture house on the rue Cambon!!! Here, for your viewing pleasure (and feel free to click on the links beneath each picture if you want to do more than just look!), are three new belles tissues!

Sorry for the less than usual quality of the photos. I took the pictures from my phone. But these fabrics are totally GORGE! (Is that French?)

The other news is that the test came back. The number is 25. Sigh...
Well, you know what they say, when the going gets tough, the tough get sewing! So I think I'll spend this weekend doing exactly that. I should have the bulk of my jacket completed. I picked up some chain while I was on my trip, so I'll apply that. I need to figure out what to do for trim, but I have time for that. OMG, and I have to show you one more fabric (it isn't Parisian, but it is totally fabulous): Fancy Italian RPL in bright orange! I fell so in love with this that I took 3 yards to make into this Vogue dress:

Isn't that just totally Michelle Obama??? I love it, and I'm going to make that as soon as I can!

I want to sign off with a big shout out to Carolyn of Diary of a Sewing Fanatic. We had dinner last night. Carolyn is one of the dearest women around. She's funny, smart, sassy and the best dinner companion and friend you could ever wish for! Her blog is a must-read. Carolyn sweetie, it was wonderful to see you! Let's do it again soon - say in 12 weeks or so?

Parting Shot: Two Redheads

Sorry it's blurry, but the fabulous Laura Bennett and I got together in New York this week. You know she has a book coming out? It's going to be funny and fabulous - definitely a must read!

That's all for now. Stay well and happy sewing!

Another Coco Boucle

OMG kittens, look at this! This gorgeous bouclé from the atelier of the Kaiser is so beautiful, so classic, and so classy that you will have a jacket or skirt from this for-evah (in Bostonian parlance)! This won't last. I put it up with little fanfare last night and already it's selling out, so don't miss it.

And to those who say, "I'll wait on fabrics like this until I'm better at sewing"? Fear Not the Fabric!

Another Bouclé from the Same Couturier!!!

How gorgeous is this fantastic houndstooth bouclé?

I simply fell in love with this one! It's from the same Parisian atelier as the one I got last Friday. How fabulous is this bold houndstooth! I only have 17 yards left (it's already selling), so don't miss it. The last one didn't even last the night! Click on the link below the picture to go straight to the fabric.

Pattern Review - Kwik Sew 3115 Yoga Pants and Top

The subtitle for this post is "Playing with Large Prints". I've had this pattern in my stash for several years, but never got around to making it. But when I got the new batch of Swiss 4 way Nylon/Lycra knits, I decided to try it out.

Pattern Description: From Kwik Sew's Website, The Misses' Pants & Tops are designed for two-way stretch fabric with 75% stretch. We suggest cotton Lycra¨, nylon Lycra¨, rayon Lycra¨, or swimwear fabric.

Misses' pants and tops. The very close fitting pull-on pants have flared legs in two lengths and a wide waistband with narrow elastic. The View A camisole has a shelf bra lining and elastic at the top edge and shoulder straps. The View B top has a V-neckline and armholes finished with self fabric bindings.

I made View B - the V-neck top and cropped pants.

Sizing: XS-XL. I used a Small for the pants and a Medium for the top.

Fabric Used: Swiss 4-Way Stretch in Lemongrass for the pant legs and trim on the top. Panel Print Rayon Jersey in Turquoise/Brown/Yellow for the body of the top and the trim on the pants.

Needle/Notions Used: I used my serger for all the seams, so Stretch 75/11 needle. Other than that and Maxilock thread, not much!

Did it look like the photo or drawing when you got through? Yes

How were the instructions? I didn't use them, though I did glance at them. They are typical for Kwik Sew. In other words, very clear.

Construction Notes: The panel print I used for the top is a large-scale print. Working with prints like these can be tricky. Or maybe interesting is a better description. It gives you lots of leeway for creative layout. To really get a feel for the way it would look I traced the entire pattern piece - both sides. Kwik Sew's original pattern piecees are one half of the top front and back which are cut on the fold. That works just fine in a less complex print, but I wanted to see the way the entire piece would look. I tried laying it out in a few different ways. I knew I didn't want to center the large square in the middle of my front torso. So I tried laying it out with the panel band running down the center front.

Mmmm, no. I played with a couple of other layouts and finally decided to do a slightly offset one.

Because this fabric has generous stretch both in the lengthwise and the crosswise grains, I cut the back on the cross grain.

During the sewing process, I decided to do things a little differently from the way the pattern instructs. Kwik Sew's instructions have you sew the side seams and then attach the armhole bands. I decided to reverse that order. I attached the bands first:

Then I sewed the sides together.

Any changes? I used contrast bands for the top, made from the pants fabric. I used the borders of the panels from the top fabric as the waistband and hem treatments on the pants:

Likes/Dislikes: This pattern goes together in less than an hour. I like the style. The pants are brighter than I usually wear, but I can use sunny colors these days. I didn't dislike anything.

Would you do it again? Would you recommend it? Yes and yes. As I say, this goes together very quickly. I'd recommend it for anyone who has advanced beginner or higher skills. If you know your way around a serger, it's even faster to sew up.

Conclusion: A great exercise pattern. I'll get lots of use from this. I will probably make the longer pants in black and they'll be a staple in my workout wardrobe. Here are pictures of the front and back:

They call me mellow yellow... quite rightly!

The Chanel jacket is progressing nicely. I'll get around to setting in the sleeves later this week, then really, I will post pictures. It's just kind of boring to look at right now, you know?

Happy sewing!

You have GOT to See this Fabric!!!

I just got this in today and had to put it up right away. And it is so gorgeous I had to put it over here! This is from that really famous couturier (hint: Rue Cambon). I was only able to get 13 yards, and already it's selling out. So if you are looking for the fabric to make the jacket or suit, get your bad self over to Gorgeous Fabrics and get some before it's gone. I don't think this will last the weekend! Click on the link under the picture to go directly to the fabric page.

Oh who was I kidding? It didn't even last the night, sorry! No I'm not.
